Celebrating 40 new acquisitions to the National Gallery’s collection, Called to Create includes a range of sculptural and mixed media pieces alongside Gee’s Bend quilts. Explore how the featured artists mined deep cultural and spiritual traditions to create unique works that speak to themes of place, memory, community, resilience, and transformation. Join DCPZ and NGA Senior Educator Nathalie Ryan for some slow looking and a conversational exhibition tour focusing on the fascinating stories of the makers. Learn how these works invite rethinking about how we might better tell the story of American art and American society. Then reflect on the implications for educators and classroom curriculum, across grade-levels and disciplines.

Nathalie Ryan is a Senior Educator in the Department of Interpretation, Learning & Engagement Division, at the National Gallery of Art, where she has led programs since 2002. Nathalie is an educational advocate, author, mindfulness meditation instructor, harpist, and maker of hand-made books. She has been an instructor at Harvard Project Zero and WISST for many years!

Location: East Building, 4th Street and Constitution Ave NW, in the Education Studio, doors open at 10:00 am, workshop begins at 10:15am.

Upon the conclusion of the workshop at 12:15pm, you are invited to stay for some hands-on art making inspired by the exhibition (optional, in the East Building Atrium, ongoing public event until 3:00pm).
