The Power of Monologues: In the Classroom and in Performance (Workshop and Performance)

Join playwright and teaching artist Mary Hall Surface at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater for an interactive workshop to experience how to craft monologues with students around challenging subjects. We will then see My Body, No Choicea world premiere theatre performance “featuring monologues from eight of America’s most dynamic female playwrights on women’s choices on the autonomy of their bodies.” Gather after the performance with Mary Hall, one of the production’s playwrights, to reflect on the diverse perspectives shared in the performance and the power of humanizing divisive issues through the sharing of stories.
The workshop will begin in the Molly Smith Study on the first floor of Arena Stage at 12:30pm. Enter through the main doors to the theatre. Please plan to eat beforehand and arrive by 12:25pm. There is limited on-street parking surrounding Arena, as well as a pre-paid parking garage and the nearby garages that serve The Wharf.  Arena Stage is easily accessible by Metro, being one block from the Waterfront Station. Click here for more transportation and parking information
The performance begins at 1:30pm and is 75 minutes long. Please purchase your ticket using this linkAll tickets are $18 — a deliberate nod to the voting age of 18. Seating is general admission and we will try to sit as a group. We encourage everyone to buy their ticket when they register for this workshop. (Abby will also send out a general reminder about buying tickets.)
We encourage you to come with friends and family (please note that the performance is most appropriate for ages 13+).  Please register them for the workshop or they may attend just the show and post-show discussion. (FYI, the workshop will be limited to 35 participants.)
