DESIGNING FOR CHANGE IN MUSEUM EDUCATION: EXPLORATIONS OF REPRESENTATION & POWER

Brought to you by JusticexDesign and the Professional Development Collaborative at Washington International School.

Founded in 2019 with educators in Washington, DC, and directed by Harvard Project Zero researcher Sarah Sheya, the JusticexDesign (JxD) initiative has developed a framework and tools for teachers that emphasize justice-centered pedagogy and the importance of engaging in dialogue around power and representation in the design of everyday systems and content. This virtual conference is part of JxD’s efforts to bring its framework to the museum setting as well as classrooms.

Join museum colleagues from around the country for an opportunity to explore:

• Practical applications of JxD tools and framework in museum spaces and beyond;
• Stories of educators using the JxD tools and practices in classrooms and museums;
• Hands-on making experiences that apply justice-oriented practices that can be used in museums, classrooms, and other learning spaces;
• Strategies for increasing community engagement and community partnerships that center JxD tools and practices;
• Reflections on one’s own identities as they relate to this justice-driven work.

The conference sessions will offer ample tools, resources, and museum artifacts for engaging in critical conversations around justice, design, power, and representation. Throughout the conference, participants will be given time to reflect on connections between JxD tools and practices and their own teaching and learning contexts, as well as space to co-create their own strategies in community with one another. The conference is designed for museum professionals and educators working with all ages of learners and subject areas.

Conference Schedule:

• Monday, October 16, 2:00-4:30 PM EST: Introduction to the JusticexDesign framework and the research on its application in the museum setting.
• Tuesday, October 17, 2:00-4:30 PM EST: Continue the conversation with museum education practitioners.
• Thursday, October 19, 2:00-4:30 PM EST: Explore collaborations between museums and classroom educators using the JxD framework.
